Determination of a Duck

Duck on Pond
Soon it will be time for the ducks to fly south for the winter, but for now they are still enjoying their mountain abode before their long journey. While basking beside the river recently, listening to the praise and worship music on my iPod, I was watching the water rush by and observed that in some places it looked peaceful and calm, while in other areas, it was turbulent and white. Then suddenly I spotted an unusual movement in the water. Upon closer observation I found that it was a lone duck swimming upstream, against the strong current.

The way I see it the little duck had several choices. It could go with the flow of water and get somewhere really fast using the current of the water to assist in his journey, but he might not get to where he really wanted to go. He could get out of the water altogether and choose to go nowhere. Or he could do what he was doing and paddle against the current which was slower and harder, but he could still make progress in making it to his destination, some place upstream.

Now I don’t know what was going through that duck’s mind as I watched him, but I do know what was going through mine. Often times we as humans take the easy route, the route of least resistance, the fast track in our lives, because that is what others are doing, but is that what God really wants? We are not called to be like the rest of the world; we are called to be different, just as that duck was going against the stream, we too sometimes must go against the flow of what the rest of society is doing. We must take a stand and even though it might be hard and slow and even sometimes painful we must make the choice to follow God’s plan. What is God asking you to do that might seem strange to the world that we live in and may be difficult to accomplish? Will you be obedient to His leading?

Proverbs 14:23a All hard work brings a profit.
