Reactions to the Storms of Life
What do you do when the storms of life come your way? Do you want to run back to bed and pull the covers over your head in hopes that they go away? Do you seek the help of friends, family or counselors who can help you solve the crisis? Do you get angry because after all, you don’t deserve the problems? Or do you go to God, praying and asking Him to show you what He wants you to learn and grow and do in the situation?
We all handle difficult circumstances in different ways, according to our personalities, our health, our resources, our stage of life, along with a myriad of other things. I believe that we can learn something from the way two birds handle the storms in their lives. When a turkey senses a storm coming, he will run to the barn, and hide in a corner in hopes that the storm will not discover him. It doesn’t really help, but I guess in a way it makes him feel more secure. The eagle on the other hand feels the storm brewing and gets out of the safety of his nest and soars on the currents of the wind. The eagle knows that it is only during the turbulence of a storm that he can ascend to heights which otherwise cannot be achieved. It takes extraordinary assistance to reach the heavens. As my friend Ellie says, “The turkey gets eaten,” but we can see that the eagle get closer to God. The eagle is confident and trusting; the turkey is abandoned and afraid.
When we reach out to God and get closer to Him in times of stress or misfortune, we can feel the freedom of letting Him control the situation. We must learn to rest in His faithfulness and allow Him to carry us to new heights where we can grow in our love and appreciation of His constant care. What will be you choose—to be like the turkey or the eagle? I hope you will join me in soaring, not cowering in a corner. Draw near to God and see where He will carry you.
Isaiah 40:31 But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
