What Do You Sell?

Who me? A salesperson? No way! That’s the thought that comes to mind when I think of myself as a salesperson. My friend in Texas is a real salesperson…she sells blankets…in Texas...thousands of them. That’s someone who can sell.

I have been in sales before and have done quite well at it, but it’s because selling to me is just a form of education about a great product. I wouldn’t be able to sell a bad product, in fact I would probably try to talk a person out of something if I didn’t feel it was right for them.

Once sitting on a plane I was visiting with my seatmate about my hometown of Jackson, Mississippi. I was telling of the precious people, the heritage and history, the fabulous food, the amazing azaleas, the other appealing things about the city.  I’m not sure if I sold the person sitting next to me, but the person behind me said, "They should hire you to work at the Chamber of Commerce because I want to move there."

While working for Vail Resorts, I have been in sales and marketing for the mountains of Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone and Heavenly. I was good at selling the mountains because my family and I have had great adventures at those places, so I simply have to describe the places and tell about our fun times.

A true salesman is someone that can sell anything, not just something that they love; like the old saying he can sell ice to an Eskimo.  That’s why I was surprised at dinner a couple of weeks ago when my friend insisted that I was a salesperson. She said, “You sell Jesus.” As I thought about it I realized that it fits my two qualifiers—I teach about Jesus—that’s the education part and I love Him—He’s the great product.

I’m not really selling Jesus, because He is far too valuable for people to be able to afford and it wouldn’t be called grace if people could buy Him. However I will keep on telling people about Him for the rest of my days because I want to share the thing I love most with other people. Have you received Him as your gift? If not what are you waiting for? Today would be the perfect day.

Ephesians 2:8-9 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.
