The Treasure Box

It had been a long year for my 6 year old grandson Will. As a kindergartner, there are great expectations put on you to sit still, listen, pay attention, follow instructions and various other rules to be followed. To encourage the appropriate behavior the teacher allows the students to earn tickets for good behavior. When ten have been collected they get to make a trip to The Treasure Box.

It is now February and there had not yet been a trip to The Treasure Box for little Will, because he is 100% boy, not bad, just a boy. Last week it happened to be picture day and the teacher told the students that they would have an extra opportunity for a ticket…if they could behave during the photo shoot. As Will describes it, he thought to himself, “I can earn a ticket for that short amount of time.” And then as he began to count in his mind that since he already had 8 tickets and if he earned the special one offered then he would only need one more to order to earn the right to the long awaited destination.

Well, he did earn the ticket for good behavior during the photo session. How could he get one more? The teacher offered another opportunity that afternoon for an additional ticket and guess what… he earned that one too. Two tickets earned in one day!

Now the long awaited time arrived for the trip to The Treasure Box. Slowly he walked to the front of the room, eyes all on him, wondering what he would pick. He had probably been thinking about this moment all year long, but as he approached the box he surprised everyone, including the teacher. As he fingered through the items, his hands grasped a pink sparkly fairy wand. As he drew it out of the box, he proudly announced that he had picked a gift for his sister Molly.

Does this mean that Will is growing up? That he is maturing? I think so. His behavior is improving; he is able to think through and process cause and effect; and he is putting others ahead of himself.

Will is making progress and so should we. If you are the same person you were last year, last month or even last week, you are not being changed and transformed into who God wants you to become—Christ-like. All it takes is one step at a time, one day at a time and before you know it progress will be made. I’m in are you?

Colossians 1:28 He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ.
