Should God Be First in Your Life? The Answer Might Surprise You.
Last week I heard Wes Roberts say that we are not supposed
to put God first in our lives. This made me perk up a bit to hear what else he
was going to say. After all, most churches teach that God is supposed to be
first in our lives. So was he preaching heresy or was he going to enlighten me?
As he spoke he said that the closest thing the Bible says
about putting God first is in Matthew 6:33 “But seek first his
kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as
well.”
Wes wasn’t trying to tell us that God should not have
importance or significance in our lives, but his point was that if we only put
God in first position we are leaving Him out of a good portion of our day. In
other words, if we spend time with Him first thing in the morning what about
all of the rest of our day? And if we
put Him in first position, does that mean that we leave Him at home when we go
to work or spend time with friends?
The speaker’s perspective was that we should not give God
any rank order of importance because if He is only first, what happens to all
of the other positions—is God left out of those all together? Instead he said,
“God should be at our core.” If He is at the center, He will permeate into all
areas of our being. We won’t be able to leave Him out of any portion of our
life. He will come up in conversation at a baseball game; you may mention Him
at the office, or even share something about Him when visiting with a stranger.
This concept makes sense to me. We must get rid of anything
else at the core that could be a distraction to the One thing that should
always be at the core.
Hmmm…maybe that’s what God meant when He said, “Love the
Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and all your strength.”
