Mount of the Holy Cross

For years people have enjoyed the awe of Mount of the Holy Cross which is a 14,000 foot mountain in the Sawatch Range of Colorado. It is named for the distinctive snow-filled cross at the top of the mountain and was proclaimed a national monument by Herbert Hoover in 1929. Painters have painted it; photographers have photographed it and hikers have hiked it, because of its special beauty.

When my children were young and visiting the area, we would take the gondola up the mountain to the observation deck at Eagle’s Nest for the perfect view of the majestic Mount of the Holy Cross.  So when my grandchildren were visiting this summer, it seemed natural to take them to the same spot for old times’ sake.

The mountain had not changed and the view was still inspiring, but something was terribly wrong. The name on the sign at Eagle’s Nest had been changed. It was no longer labeled Mount of the Holy Cross, but instead has been replaced with the designation Cross of Snow. Why would that be done? To be politically correct? To try to remove the holiness from the cross? To try not to offend someone of a different faith? Well, I am offended--why can’t my Savior’s cross be called holy? If America can allow every other faith to be recognized and given honor, why can’t Christians have some respect also? Our country has gone to an extreme to be inclusive of every religion but in the process, Christians have become the ones who are being persecuted and wronged. I am tired of it—are you?

Philippians 3:18 For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ.

Every one still calls it what it is here.. "Mount of the Holy Cross" This sign is a beacon of awareness to those of faith, and awareness to the politico'lie'sing of whats going on today with liberals and atheists.

thank you for sharing...
I agree--they can't change what we want to call it just by renaming it on a sign!

Cross in a mountain or Jesus on a piece of toast, there's nothing divine with either. To anyone who thinks it is, please share your interpretation what God was trying to say when he broke up the north arm with a landslide in 1956.

They also make us appear as nuts and psychopaths on tv. That reall disgust me, at least we are on the correct side of the fence. Christianity is such a treat the satin attacks it exclusively. One day that is all that will be left, real Christians and life will be extraordinary with a King that actually, really, genuinely loves us. Wow what a grand concept, so wonderfull...!!
