Snake at the Foot of the Bed
Last week while having lunch with a friend she asked me if I had ever heard the story about the python snake. Her husband had told it to her and I think it is worth repeating, even if you have heard it before.
There was a girl who had a python snake. She gave it the full run of her house—it could go anywhere and sleep anywhere it desired. During the day, the girl would feed the snake mice, rats or other small creatures. At night the python curled up at the foot of her bed right next to her feet. It didn’t keep her warm, since they are cold-blooded creatures and it really didn’t cuddled close to give her love; it was just there.
The girl began to notice some changes in the snake. It stopped eating and this concerned the young woman, but what really made her worry about her python is that instead of curling up at the foot of the bed, he began stretching out on the bed next to her. Since this was odd behavior for her snake, she thought it best to call her veterinarian. After describing the behavior to him, she was told to immediately bring the snake to his office, which she did.
Upon arriving at the office she was informed that her pet snake had to be killed. What was wrong with it? Couldn’t the vet just get the snake to start eating again? Wasn’t there a cure for the behavior? The doctor told her that the snake had stretched out next to her to size her up—to see if he was able to devour her and had stopped eating so he would be hungry and have room enough to swallow her whole.
I don’t know if this is a true story or not, but I do think we can learn from it. The snake is like sin. When we allow it to have free reign and to be apart of our lives without keeping it in check, it will begin ruling us and eventually will swallow us whole. Satan observes the sins in our lives that seem to ensnare us and he will use them to eventually destroy us if we don’t seek to demolish them first.
What sin are you playing around with? And what will you do to cast it out of your life today before it consumes you?
Genesis 4:7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it.

Since religion is involved, I shall back up my response with a verse.
Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
And I agree with the verse that you used that fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.
