Are You Drowning?
The rowing machine at the gym where I go and workout
periodically is strategically placed in front of a window, however the glass
doesn’t provide viewing to the outside, but to the indoor swimming pool. I
enjoy rowing not because I find it fun, but because it provides good
entertainment for me during the time I am pushing and pulling on the piece of
equipment. The lap pool, the play area and the lazy river provide opportunities
for me to people watch.
The dedication of the swimmers going back and forth in the
pool is inspiring, some as if in a race while others slow as molasses. The
children laughing and playing on the slides and in the fountains makes me smile
and long for my own. The bodies roaming beside the pool are interesting since
some are lean and buff, but on the other end of the spectrum there are those
that I feel should be told that they are way past the days of sporting a “speedo.”
And then there are the lifeguards usually lounging around looking like they are
bored and uninterested, but necessary for saving lives.
Lifeguards are not needed until something happens and then
you wouldn’t want to be without them. It
is taught that a drowning person can actually drown the person trying to save
them unless they are at a point of exhaustion, so a lifeguard is trained to try
everything before jumping into the water. Throwing a flotation device and using
a long pole are two of the things someone might try before jumping into the
water for the rescue.
God did the same thing with mankind. He wanted to save us
from sin and certain death, so He provided the law to teach us how to live, but
man failed and could not keep it. He sent the prophets to try to turn the
people back to Him, but most of the people just laughed at God’s representatives
or worse yet they mocked and even stoned them. After mankind was desperate, God
took the ultimate step of sending His own Son into the world to save us.
But just as the drowning person can cause death to the
person trying to rescue them, the very people Jesus came to save hung Him on a
cross killing Him. Whether Jesus seemed like a threat to them or they didn’t really
see a need for a Savior or they just got caught up in the moment…none of these
things really mattered because Jesus was wiling to die for each us.
The only real question is do you know Him? Have you accepted
Him as your personal Savior? If not, why not? Today would be the perfect day then
Easter would take on a whole new meaning this year.
Philippians 2:8 And being found in appearance as a man,
Jesus humbled Himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross.
