Light
The Fourth of July is one of my favorite holidays. Fireworks, picnics on the lawn and patriotic music bring back floods of memories from the past.
This year there will be food, festivities, parades and live concerts in our area, but no fireworks.
Although I adore the fireworks and will miss the light show of beauty, there is no way I want to risk a fire starting in our community with the dry conditions that we currently have.
I’m not sure why I love the fireworks so much. Maybe it’s the sky filled with colorful lights bursting forth into different shapes or maybe it’s the anticipation of what’s coming next or maybe it has something to do with the music, the purpose behind the holiday or the lights reflecting off of the lake. Maybe it’s just a combination of it all.
The Bible says that we are called to be God’s light to the world, but it doesn’t say what type of light.
- A spark is the beginning of a fire. It is small yet powerful whether ignited by a match or by using a magnifying glass and piece of paper.
- A candle can be used to light a room, but is strong enough to be seen on a clear evening as far as 30 miles away.
- A torch is a portable light source which symbolizes enlightenment and hope. Perhaps that’s why it is carried to the Olympic Games.
- A light bulb can be turned on and off according to needs.
- A campfire not only brings warmth on a cool evening and helps to keep away predators, but lights the dark night sky.
- A lighthouse is used for protecting ships and it’s passengers along a coastline.
- The sun lights an entire solar system.
As Christians we are called to be God’s light to a dark world. What kind of light are you? How bright is your light? Do you hide your light or allow it to shine brightly?
I want to be like continuous unique fireworks lighting the sky, surprising the viewers with what God is doing in the world.
Happy Fourth of July!
Matthew 5:16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
