Fine Print

Don't you just love the fine print that we encounter throughout life? It might be found in a contract, a statement of account, contest rules or some other type of agreement, but it usually contains information pertinent to what you are signing. Is it small not because of its importance level, but because someone hopes that you won't read it and will be stuck with it just because you signed on the dotted line without realizing the future consequences?

This insight came to the forefront of my mind upon arriving at the rental car desk and overhearing the customer in front of me speaking to the attendant. The renter had decided to keep his car a couple of extra days and had called to inform the company that he was doing so. To hear his side of the conversation, he had been notified by the person on the other end of the phone line that there would be no additional fees or price increase since he had called to let them know of his delay in returning the car.

However when trying to return the car he was shown the fine print in the contract he had signed days earlier which stated that he would be charged an additional $10 per day in late fees. He was furious when the customer service representative finally brought in the manager on duty to take over the negotiations of the argument. Pointing to the small print on the signed contract the man in charge insisted that the higher fee be paid, but no compromise was established. The customer actually left without returning the car pledging to come back the next day with further proof of his conversation.

Aren't we glad that God's Word, the Bible, doesn't have fine print that He wants to keep hidden from us? Nor does He leave out the important details that we need to know. God provides us with all of the information upfront. It is of equal importance, but just as with reading the contract at the car rental shop we must open our Bible, read it and put it into practice. If we don't know what it says, it is of no value to us, to change us, to mature us and to assist us along the path of life.

2 Timothy 3:16-17  All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
