Homecoming

The football game I attended recently just happened to be homecoming. I was a bit excited to see how it would be celebrated in the mountains with the casual atmosphere, but it wasn’t at all what I expected.

In Mississippi and in Texas the kids would all dress up in their finest new clothes for the homecoming game--here they were in jeans and ski jackets. In Texas, the big flowery mums with lots of streamers and bells and whistles are paraded around, the bigger and noisier the better; however there was no sign of them around here.

Well... at least the halftime show should be special with the crowning of the court, yet again I was disappointed.

In my opinion homecoming is supposed to have the band marching onto the field along with the dance team and flag corps putting on the show of the season, but the tiny little band was left alone on the sideline. The homecoming court didn’t even appear on the field, but was only announced from the loud speaker with no crowning of the king and queen at all.

Disillusioned by the lack luster homecoming display, my thoughts were quickly transformed by the realization that any homecoming here on earth even if it does include pomp and circumstance will pale in comparison to the one we will experience someday in heaven.

Our Father is planning right now for our arrival by preparing a place for us to live (John 14:3), the angels are rejoicing each time a person repents and will be able to enter the kingdom homecoming, (Luke 15:10) and there will be one huge party like we have never seen on earth (Revelation 19:1-9). We will receive crowns as though royalty (James 1:12) but we won’t even want to wear them, instead we will lay them at the feet of the one who deserves them, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ (Revelation 4:10).  We will even have new bodies designed especially for the event (2 Corinthians 2:1-5).

Now that’s one homecoming I don’t want to miss. How about you?

Philippians 3:20-21 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.
