Pothole Ponderings

"Pretty" Pothole
Hitting the brakes…Cars swerving to the left or to the right…car tires plummeting into the abyss… it must be pothole season. They are quite common along the roads in the mountainous area of Colorado this time of year. The harsh winter weather with water, ice, gravel and extreme temperatures takes its toll on the pavement. What might start with only a little crack ends up being a huge hazard in our path.

Potholes, no one likes them, but we must learn how to deal with them. They seem to pop up overnight, but in reality may be the result of months of wear and tear. Potholes almost always start with tiny fractures along the surface of the pavement, something you might not even notice while driving down the street. The cracks allow water to seep into the surface of the road, which can freeze, causing the surface of the road to buckle and become fragile. When cars drive over it, the surface breaks down and begins to crumble and deteriorate quickly.

Sin is a lot like potholes. In the beginning it’s hard to see the tiny little cracks in our life, but when they go unattended and allow the world to seep into the cracked areas, that’s when the real damage is done. The thoughts and ways of the world work underneath the surface in our hearts and wear down the protection that God provides and then soon we are in real trouble, with holes and pits in our lives.

Aren’t you glad that God does not want to leave us in ill-repair? He desires to come in and get rid of the sin and fix the damaged parts of our lives. He longs for us to be whole, complete and perfect. Our job is to throw off the sin and then keep our eyes on Him. Will you try keeping your focus on Him this week and see what potholes He will get rid of in your life?

Hebrews 12:1-2 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
