My Favorite Things....

One of my favorite things is spending time with the grand kids. Will the oldest is so bright and has wonderful questions about anything and everything, learning all the time. Molly, the only girl in the bunch is so much like her mother, with a love of people and a kind and gentle manner. Griffin is the adventurous one, athletic and always taking in life. Thomas is a little too young to see what makes him tick, but already we can tell that he loves the outdoors.
This time of year, it is fabulous to be outside, so Lynn and I have been taking Thomas on hikes in the beautiful and colorful Rocky Mountains. Due to his size, we share the duties of carrying him in the BabyBjorn. The twenty something pounds might not seem too hard to carry, but when you do it for several miles, it can tug on your shoulders, making you weary.

Thomas is a pleasure to carry even if he can get heavy, because of the excitement that he shows, by kicking his legs and cooing as we move along. I don’t want to give him up, but sharing the burden of his weight is helpful. When the trade is made and the bundle is transferred to his mother, I feel like I have forgotten or lost something. I glance around to see what might be left behind, but quickly realize that I just feel lighter, because I have given him up.

The Bible has a lot to say about what we should do with our burdens:
  • Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens. Psalm 68:19
  • Come to me all who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28
  • It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Galatians 5:1
  • Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Hebrews 12:1
  • Cast all of your anxiety on Him because He cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7
If Jesus is willing to carry our burdens for us, why do we insist on doing it all ourselves? He wants us to be free to enjoy life and fellowship with Him instead of being worn out and tired from the unnecessary weight that can hold us back. What do you need to give to God today?
